You will need:
Narcissus bulbs, bulb food, compost, trowel and mulch

  1. In early fall, dig a hole a foot deep and about twice as wide as the bulb. Mix bulb food with the soil. Add compost.

  2. Place the bulb in the hole with the tip facing upwards. If the bulbs are planted at the same depth; they will bloom at the same time.

  3. Fill the holes and mark the location so that you do not disturb the bulbs when you plant other things in your garden.

  4. Water well. Cover with mulch.

  5. Do not fertilize after flowering. Remove the blooms, allow leaves to dry naturally.

    Tips for Narcissus

  1. Buy big bulbs with a guarantee. Plant them as soon as possible to avoid the possibility of drying out. Avoid soft, or moldy bulbs.

  2. If bulbs are planted a little deeper than recommended they will last longer.

"It's perfectly okay to be a late bloomer"

    Tips for Forcing Narcissus

  1. Narcissus can be enjoyed throughout the winter by forcing the bulbs. "Paperwhite" Narcissus is one of the easiest bulbs to force. Bulbs will need a cooling period in a basement, cellar, or garage. (I keep mine in the crisper of my refrigerator) They should have aprox. 6 - 8 weeks cold treatment.

  2. Planting can take place any time from September to December. The earlier you plant, the earlier you will have flowers. (generally these bulbs take 3 weeks to a month to flower)

  3. Once flowers are produced, it is best to keep plants away from direct sunlight and in a cool area. This will prolong the flowering period.

  4. After forced Narcissus have finished flowering, you can keep the plants until spring and then move them to the garden. They will flower the following year outdoors.
