Carnations are available in both annual and perennial varieties. They are easy to grow from seed. They add brilliant color to any garden bed or border. Carnation will flower well into fall if you provide protection against harsh weather.

Carnations as cut flowers:

  1. One of the longest lasting cut flowers. Cut just as the flowers open. Carnations last about three weeks in a vase.

  2. You can put florist Carnations (D. Caryophyllus) into the garden in mild winter areas but they are not the best garden plant.

  3. Use Pinks in borders and rock gardens. The smaller types are great for ground cover or container plants. These make pretty filler for smaller arrangements as well.

  4. Cut a lovely bouquet from the first bloom and Carnations will bloom a second time in the garden
