   July Feature:  Sage Advice

There are thousands of different species of perennial, biennial and annual salvias. Salvias are a member of the mint family. Most are fast growing, hardy, trouble free. The best way to grow sage is to buy a couple plants and take cuttings. If you grow sage from seeds it will take about two years before you can use it. Get more sage advice HERE.

You will need:
Calendula seedlings, Peat moss or compost

  1. Calendula can be planted as soon as the soil can be worked. Prepare the bed by loosening the soil then add peat moss or compost to clay soils.

  2. Dig a hole the size of the rootball. Remove the seedling without disturbing the roots to much.

  3. Plant the Calendula seedling in the hole and pat down the soil around it.

  4. Water well. Apply enough water to seep down past the rootball. Spread mulch around seedlings.

  5. Remove faded flowers. This will encourage new Calendula blooms.

Tips for Calendulas:

  • When buying starter plants... look for bushy, compact plants with deep green growth. Avoid limp plants with withered leaves. Young plants that have been poorly cared for won't produce as many blooms.

  • Dry then crumble the blooms of Calendula and collect the seeds for planting next season.
