Alas, it's time to sit back, relax and enjoy the fruit, salads and beautiful bouquets of flowers from your garden but be wary, others are waiting to do the same. I have birds that are able to harvest my blueberries much quicker than I am. Those of you that have cats or dogs as pets will probably not have this problem. Cats and dogs will guard your garden from unwanted garden predators. If you don't have a pet you can cut up an old garden hose into 1 - 2 foot long pieces and place the pieces in conspicuous places around the area you want to protect. The birds will think it is a snake and will avoid the area. GARDENS AROUND THE WORLD HARVEST TIME REWARDS: "Preparing a dozen 6" high apple pies ready to freeze and bake in the dark cold evenings of midwinter to warm the heart and soul. As a child we always seemed to be cooking or decorating with them. Everything from breads to pies and cookies. Here is one of my all-time favorite autumn recipes (one of my dad's favorites too!) Grandma's Persimmon Cookies 1 cup persimmon pulp strained 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon cloves 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup butter 1 egg 1 cup walnuts chopped 1 can raisins optional Cream Sugar and butter in a large mixing bowl. Add egg, pulp and soda. Stir well. Add all dry ingredients. Add walnuts and raisins last. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes. �� Notes: Grandma Beech always used to make these for Dad. Since he worked in town he would always stop by and get some from her, and she usually sent him home with a tin. That was one thing about Grandma, she was never without an empty tin to send something home in! Now each fall I get a bunch of persimmons and spend an evening making persimmon pulp in the blender, straining , measuring and freezing it, so that I always have some ready to make cookies for Dad.
