Aster,how to grow aster,problems with asters,maintenance,forum,chat

Asters range in appearance and come in all colors, including blue. Most have yellow centers. Asters range in height from one to three feet tall. My favorite is the China Aster. This variety is more difficult to grow but they are great as both cutflowers and in beds.

You will need:
Aster seeds, compost, trowel and mulch.

  1. Sow seeds indoors 6 weeks before the last frost.

  2. Move seedlings outdoors, once all danger of frost has passed.

  3. Plant seedlings 6-18 inches apart.

  4. Cover with mulch to protect the shallow roots.

  5. Water well.

    Tips for Asters

  1. For best cutflowers; cut Asters once they have completely opened.

  2. Grow several varieties of Aster for succession blooming. Mountain Aster is a nice May flower to be planted with other midseason or fall varieties. Plant new seedlings when the already established ones reach 6 inches in height. Many dwarf variety Asters are great in rock gardens.

  3. Do not plant in the same location the following year. China Aster is prone to fungus diseases.

  4. Rather than buying expensive pesticides and risk harming the environment; plant asters throughout your garden to deter most insects.
